OUR STORY.

Imperial Paper Box Corp. was founded in Brooklyn, NY, by Morris and Ettie Sukoff in 1902. After Morris lost his job in the silent film industry due to technology changes, he began selling handmade wooden boxes crafted by his wife, Ettie, for cosmetics, jewelry, and cigarettes. The business grew from their kitchen table to the basement, ultimately leading to the purchase of their first factory after they pitched a new style of music packaging with artwork to Columbia and RCA.

Pictured above is the first album to have artwork on the cover. Manufactured by Imperial Paper Box Corp.

Imperial Paper Box Corp became the FIRST COMPANY IN AMERICA to manufacture album covers with artwork and built the first machines that semi-automated production. Prior to Imperial's innovation, music records were packaged in plain brown paper bags without any artwork, which also led to the records getting scratched. Sales surged by 800% overnight when the Sukoffs convinced Columbia Records and RCA to try their new style of packaging.

Imperial expanded to seven factories, producing the majority of vinyl record jackets in circulation from the late 1930s to the 1980s. They manufactured for some of the biggest names in music history, including Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, The Beach Boys, and countless others.

As technology evolved from vinyl LPs to cassettes, VHS, and later CDs and DVDs, the Sukoff’s adapted to the changing times. Imperial created collectible box sets for hit shows like The Sopranos and I Love Lucy, as well as for musicians such as AC/DC, Jay-Z, AEROSMITH and Barbra Streisand.

As streaming grew and presented new challenges, we refused to give up. This is when the NEXT GENERATION of our family stepped in, determined to carry on our family’s business legacy. Ira Sukoff, Morris’s grandson, currently manufactures specialty box sets and vinyl albums under the name IPB Packaging. He can be reached here. Meanwhile, Morris’s granddaughter, who is Ira’s daughter is raising funds for a film that shares more of this story and is also expanding her strategy consulting business, which she has named Imperial Paper Box Corp.
